SUGGESTED READING: Hot off the Press: The Magic Tutu, Remembering Henry LeTang In June
Lifelong dancer and teacher Amy Arnaz published her first book, The Magic Tutu, a children's story about a young ballerina who learns the true meaning of kindness. Arnaz, wife of Desi Arnaz, Jr, danced with the San Diego Ballet Company and the Nevada Dance Theater before opening her own dance studio, which she ran for 27 years. In 1998, she and her husband founded the nonprofit Boulder City Ballet Company for children.
The Magic Tutu draws on Arnaz's experiences teaching young dancers, including her daughter, Haley, now 30. "I had always made up children's stories for my daughter as I was raising her," Arnaz says. "I told her stories about a little ballerina with blond hair and brown eyes, which was her. They were always about some sort of dilemma, or about something that had happened at my dance studio."
The stories became the basis for an original ballet Arnaz created for her young dancers at BCBC. Then, encouraged by friends and customers to write a book, she decided to go for it. "It happened very naturally," she says. "It just blossomed out of my being a mom." Arnaz self-published The Magic Tutu through BookSurge, an Amazon.com company, but hopes to find a major publisher for this title and its successors, which will comprise a series called "Little Haley Stories." All proceeds from the sale of The Magic Tutu and related merchandise will support BCBC. Pen Pal: What's In Kat's Mailbag This Week Hi Kat, Read your newsletter and saw the student email about blubber. You actually said that a while ago, except with characteristic vividness, you referred to the callused point of the elbow as the "scruffy". So that day, you kept telling us to "look for your scruffies". It was very effective!
Speaking of tips, though, I will pass on a tip from someone who had a good way of reminding us to remember to "take our arm with us" when promenading, not letting it hang behind and throw off balance. We were asked to imagine that we had a big pet dog sitting next to us, with our palm resting lightly on his head. As we would promenade, the teacher would say, "Pet your dog!!" It was very helpful in keeping that dog (and hand) in sight! Also, because it makes you imagine your hand is in contact with something, your fingers and palm are "alive", not just stuck out there like a plane wing. You are the most wonderful dancer and teacher. Know that you make a difference! Thank you for everything you do! --- T IF YOU NEED SPECIAL ATTENTION, Feel Free to contact Kat here. Dancers tend to disregard time for muscle recovery and summer is especially intense. Please eat good lean proteins and fresh foods - minimize junk food and stay hydrated so you don't cramp up, and most important REST well! Recipe for a multi-mineral homemade electrolyte drink from fellow dancer: It's fantastic for keeping the blood balanced and the strength up: Freshly squeezed lemons (probably about 6 per 4 quarts of water), maple syrup to taste, pinch or so of cayenne pepper (that's where the minerals are), filtered water to dilute to taste. | | |
