RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK...co-starring the Fruit of the Month: Watermelon: An American favorite for meals and snacks. People can't seem to get enough of the sweet treat, and nutritionists have long appreciated the health benefits watermelon provides. Recently research has shed new light on its potential health benefits. Watermelon contains high concentrations of lycopene, an antioxidant that may help reduce the risks of cancer and other diseases. Watermelon, the fruit that is really a Vegetable. Watermelon can be traced back to Africa and is part of the cucumber and squash family. Early watermelons were mainly rind and seeds. Today's varieties are larger, the flesh sweeter, the seeds smaller and the rind thinner. It is perhaps the most refreshing, thirst quenching fruit of all. Watermelon consists of 92% water and 8% sugar, so it is aptly named. Americans eat over 17 lbs of watermelon each year. The largest one on world record (Guinness Book of World Records) weighed 262 pounds.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: They who dance Find infinite golden floors Beneath their feet. -- Marjorie Allen Seiffert
JUST FOR FUN: Ballet Parking ...OR Make your own Street Party Sign. Tips of the Week: Pointe, Health, Diet & Shopping POINTE TIPS: Calcium deficiency is a leading contributor in stress fractures, which can sideline you for an entire summer. Don't let a stress fracture get in the way of rehearsals, classes and pointe training. Try adding calcium rich snacks like cheese and yogurt to your diet. For an added kick, toss some walnuts and flaxseeds into your yogurt. Both aid calcium absorption!
Extended pointe class time has been arranged beginning in September --thanks for your patience.
Is the floor tutu slick for your pointe work??? Here are two tips: 1. Trim the satin off the tips of your pointe shoes to expose the canvas underneath for more traction. 2. Rubberize them.....Go to Bed Bath and Beyond and get some bathtub decals, where you used to be able to find daiseys and they were the perfect pointe shoe tip or check this out.
SHOPPING TIP: Mesh backpack Mesh allows damp items to dry and air a bit on the way home.
HEALTH TIPS: Hydration. Experts recommend we drink six to seven glasses of H2O per day, so keep a bottle handy. Make sure you listen to your body and stay healthy so that you can get take full advantage of the summer program. Drink lots of water, don't skip meals, get plenty of sleep and take breaks when you need them. ...Sweat Happens!!! Contrary to popular belief, sweat is odorless. The bacterium that accumulates on skin to break down the sweat is what causes odor. Natural deodorants neutralize smells and provide antiseptic action against bacteria. Only about 1% of the body's sweat is produced under the arms. Natural deodorants won't do as much for wetness, but they combat odor.
STRETCH OF THE MONTH: PLANK POSE, adjusted for dancer's arm maintenance. Kat's Weekly Mailbag and Special Reminders Hi Kat, Regarding arm flab: Many years ago I took class from a guy named Ron Bostick. I don't think anyone remembers him unless they belong to AARP. Anyway, Ron was very strict about proper arm placement (as you are) and he repeated one thing in every class: "You'll thank me when you're 40 and on the beach!" Thanks for reading this. ---L.
