Factoid: New York City:
The term "The Big Apple" was coined by touring jazz musicians of the 1930's who used the slang expression "apple" for any town or city. Therefore, to play New York City is to play the big time ~ The Big Apple. There are also more Irish in New York City than in Dublin, Ireland, more Italians in New York City than in Rome, Italy, and more Jews in New York City than In Tel Aviv, Israel.

SUGGESTED READING:
Ballet Shoes Dances Onto BBC One. EVERY little girl's favourite book Ballet Shoes is being turned into a BBC film. A wonderful and charming story!

The kids' classic, by Noel Streatfeild, will star Victoria Wood, Richard Griffiths and Marc Warren. Set in 1930s London, it follows orphans Pauline, Petrova and Posy Fossil, who were adopted as babies by Gum, an ccentric explorer. Then he disappears and everything changes.

Mr. Patrelle reports that fellow dancer Justin Allen, who has just come out with his first novel. It is called SLAVES OF THE SHINAR, and it's a ripping adventure fantasy set in ancient Sumeria (present day Iraq). the story of a land consumed by war, of a people trying to survive, and of two men in the middle of it all, redefining themselves and their futures. On August 15th, at 7pm, Justin will be reading from his novel (and signing copies), at McNally Robinson Bookstore, 52 Prince St., in Soho. Here's what the folks at McNally Robinson have to say about the event.

Kat's Weekly Mailbag
Dear Kat,
After class last Friday, I mentioned to my husband, who is a Jersey City firefighter, that you are a BIG FAN and supporter of the NYFD. Over the weekend while at work, he picked up a T-shirt for me and thought you'd like one too! So enjoy it & now you can show a lil love for the boyz in the city next door to you! Thank you always for your dedication to making everyone of your classes more & more fun, challenging, educational & fulfilling every chance you get!! All the extra you do makes a great impact & is VERY MUCH appreciated! I'm sure all of your students would say the same...it really is very hard to find a teacher who cares, especially in an adult class! I can honestly say that I learn something new in EVERY class! You are an extraordinary teacher & Artist. All my best W.R.

Dear W.R. and hubby J, Thank you so much for the lovely gift of the Jersey City firefighter's Tee, Lub our hero's at the fire departments everywhere, and thank you for your kind words. It's my great joy and pleasure to teach these ballet classes for each one of you and to stop class, whenever a cute fireman is near the class vacinity!!! K.

Tips: Health, Diet, Shopping & Etiquette
VEGETABLE OF THE MONTH: Celery and Fennel....and check out the food pyramid.

HEALTH TIPS:
ICE' (In Case of Emergency) Campaign
The concept of 'ICE' is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As cell phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name 'ICE' (In Case Of Emergency). The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital Staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as 'ICE.' For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc. A great idea that will make a difference! Let's spread the concept of ICE by storing an ICE number in our Mobile phones today!
