Born in Moscow in 1979, Svetlana Lunkina was once described by former Bolshoi Ballet director Alexei Fadeyechev as "the hope of the company". Physically gifted, beautifully proportioned, and moreover of an exquisite delicacy and femininity; with her fragile, ethereal appearance Svetlana Lunkina seems destined to dance the romantic repertoire. A softly radiant personality with a physique that displays easy grace and fragility providing dancing that is notably unforced and gentle, Svetlana Lunkina impresses above all by her fine dramatic abilities. Her characters, established with winning tenderness, are already remarkably worked out. With proper care and time Lunkina may develop into one of the Bolshoi Ballet's great ballerinas of the next century.--Marc Haegeman. Performance Corner: Catch Your Fellow Students

Watch out, Baryshnikov. There's a new dancer in town, and its name is HRP-2. The creation of a team of researchers led by Japanese researcher Dr. Shin'ichiro Nakaoka, HRP-2 is a dancing robot capable of imitating a routine at a moment's notice. After overcoming the challenge of programming the robot to carry out complex leg movements without losing stability, the group used software to teach it to copy the moves of a human dance teacher via video motion capture technology. HRP-2 was able to copy a Japanese folk routine, "Aizu-Bandaisan," after watching dance instructor Hisako Yamada perform the dance. "The result that the robot stably imitated human dance motions, including dynamic-style steps, while keeping the original motion rhythm is a novel achievement for biped humanoid robots," says Dr. Nakaoka, who also had details of his work published in The International Journal of Robotics Research. The researchers have proposed that robots programmed with their software could be used to preserve knowledge of traditional Japanese folk dances. Human dancers need not worry, however: While HRP-2 does have some advantages--such as being incapable of soreness or exhaustion-it's still no substitute for the real thing. The Aizu-Bandaisan is primarily a dance involving upper body moves, and roboticists are still a long way from creating machines that are able to produce arabesques, pirouettes and other more intricate movements. --TK
