Classroom Confidential: TMI and Honorable Mentions
'Keeping it Fresh' article in Pointe Magazine this month Dec/Jan issue, written by Laura Di Orio, page 68 and right next page 69!!! lol!!!..."Bushels of Nuts" featuring Royce Z...Picture of Khiara B. in a non-traditional Snow Variation....Check out Erik N....As some of you know, Ashley C. has been out of the country for awhile, but when she returns in January, she'll be teaching Contemporary Jazz just like before, just a new day and time...Miriam Aziz visiting class from Europe for the holidays just released her debut album 'We're Inside Out" listen here...Speaking of "InsideOut," Ginger Cox took a box structure made of poles and fashioned it into the equivalent of a house and a jungle gym for four female dancers to hang and stretch from and one of those dancers was Hyosun Choi. See the review in the Times and keep reading to find "the resonant technical skills of Khiara Bridges"...Did you know? Daphne does beauty treatments, and such. Ask her about an appointment....Judi Mark woohoo nice press for teachers. Congrats and thank you!...Happy birthday Yuka!...MERDE' to Alena K on her Samba performance this weekend!

Tony @ Circular Power: Tony trains Kat 5 1/2 hours per week in preparation for this 'Nutcracker" season.

If you love good champagne you will love this: Champagne tips from a Snob! Moet White Star and Don Perignon, Tattinger, Pol Roget, Cliquot and Perrier Jouet. I had a Laurent Perrier Cuvee Brut Rose that was one of the best things I have ever tasted. It costs about 60-70 a bottle but so worth it if you want something super special. That and Cristal are the best champagnes i have ever had. As they should be at the prices they ask.

Andros on the Nutcracker Mystique: Mr A a dear friend, teacher and mentor to Kat for over 20++ years now. He has the answers to all those ballet questions you need tutu know. Kat is always very honored to attend Mr A. class in preparation for performances. It's a strong technique class injected with humor that only Mr. A can provide. At 82 years he teaches class Monday thru Friday and plans to continue .....Woooo Hooo Mr. A you rock. Kat tries to have dinner with Mr. A at least once per month and discuss the finer pointes of ballet and life in general, his perspective is unique and cherished deeply.

Ballet terms: 'Elan. Attack. Pertains to the manner in which a dancer attacks a step, both emotionally and physically.

Quote of the week: "I don't want people who want to dance, I want people who have to dance." George Balanchine (1904-1983).

Mind Your Manners Etiquette dos and don'ts for dance class: Will you please tell the teacher you must leave class early before class, seems very rude to glance at someones behind as they leave. Arrrrrrrrg. For more on etiquette check out Issue 17: August 20, 2007.

Weekly Tips: Pointe, Health and Shopping
    Health:

    • Stinky feet: There are about one trillion bacteria on each of your feet. That's why your ballet shoes stink!! Git canvas ones and wash um occasionally!

    • Perfect your Italian Fouettes

    • Grapes and raisins can be toxic to dogs

    • Exercise---and Be Happy.

    • Honey Helps You Heal: The next time you skid on the marley or scrape up your knees rolling all over the studio, spread some honey on your cuts to help repair the damage. Before antibiotic creams, honey was the healer of choice. Studies have shown that honey can act as a mild painkiller, has anti-microbial benefits for healing, and could even help speed the process along. So douse your band-aids in the sweet stuff, but don't forget to wash the area with warm soap and water first and disinfect it.

    • BY the way...your Green tip....None of your beeswax candles. Light 'em up and you'll see why: They burn cleaner and longer than your average candles, and are petroleum-free. Sometimes they're a bit pricier than other candles, but a longer, cleaner, greener burn makes beeswax a better option.

    • Stretch-o-da-Month: See December 2nd newsletter here.

    Kat's Weekly Mailbag
Hi Kat,Just in case you didn't know about it... I found out that "Ballet" -- About American Ballet Theatre is available on DVD for the first time. It was released in 1995, but hasn't been available on DVD (or even tape, I think) until now. The filmmaker is a BRILLIANT doc. maker, and I'm sure it's really well done! Hope everything's going great back here! Love, Bretigne

Kat-Hi, i just wanted to thank you for including the Gypsy of the Year stuff in your newsletter. I'm doing the opening number tribute to West Side Story with many original members of the 1957 company and it with the strike we were really worried it wasn't going to happen but are so blessed that we will have the opportunity to perform. They rescheduled it to the 17th and 18th and we are doing it at the New Amsterdam Theater. It should be fun. Thanks for your constant devotion to your students (and humor!!!!). smile, Matt Steffens

Ballerina of the Month: Natalia Dudinskaya
Natalia Dudinskaya 1912 - 2003: Enjoyed a dazzling career as prima ballerina with the Kirov Ballet (now the Maryinsky Ballet) when it was at its artistic height during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s.

    • Mariinsky Ballet: here.

    • Classic Motion Picture: Sleeping Beauty.Dudinskaya possessed a brilliant memory and was invaluable to the Kirov as repetiteur. She knew not only the roles she danced but every step and nuance of the whole choreography of the ballet.

    • Obit: Here.

    • Swan Lake: 1953 performance.

    • More...check out the head dress. She inspired new generations of dancers with her ruthless commitment and technical virtuosity.
    • Her students 1989. A direct linage from Cecchetti and a favourite pupil of Vaganova.

    • Book: Stars of the Russian Ballet

    • Headshot: here.

    • Glory of the Kirov DVD: here. Dudinskaya leaves no survivors. Her husband died in 1992. A son also predeceased her. Cheers to a great lady.

As the brightest light in art, of course, shines the name Natalia Dudinskaya, the undisputed prima ballerina of the St. Petersburg ballet of the twentieth century. Her legend of today is connected to the legends of Pavlova, Karsavina and Nijinsky. But it is only she, Dudinskaya, who appears as the link between the two centuries.

    THIS MONTH IN DANCE HISTORY
(Also see our last newsletter for a more complete list of December history).

    • December 1, 1957: New York City Ballet, debuted Balanchine's Agon, a work that was radical both for its modernist vocabulary and pairing of a black man (Arthur Mitchell) and white woman (Diana Adams) in a pas de deux. Critics and audiences went wild for it--dance writer Arlene Croce said she didn't sleep for a week.

    • December 17, 1892: The first-ever performance of The Nutcracker, with choreography by Ivanov and score by Tchaikovsky, premièred at the Maryinsky Theater in St. Petersburg. The reviews weren't kind. "The papers, as always, reviled me cruelly," Tchaikovsky wrote.

    And finally....
