A Word (or more) from Kat
Okay here it is…April, bloomin' springtime oh yeah allergies! Be sure to check out dance performances all around the city…lots tutu see! We had fun last month with the Asian Themed Adagio '04, remembering the NY Times Adagio '07, and the always fun March "Jig/Gigue". This Month we will celebrate the joy of dancing with the "Josh" adagio '05 next week and the "Palm Tree" adagio for Earth Day and Arbor Day the week towards the end of the month. Many of you knew Josh W and performed this sentimental adagio for his friends and family at his memorial service. And as I promised on that day, we all dance this one week every year to celebrate his life and his love of dance! Love you Josh always!

Remember we have the long pirouette combo on Mondays, work on those wretched fouettes every Wednesday briefly! And of course our favorite Friday night adagio at the barre! Come join us for all the exciting ballet training exercises to work your body into springtime shape!!! -Kat

Taylor's Tales
A new column by our webmaster, Taylor. This week:
The Art of the Apprentice: Rebecca Kelly Ballet

Rebecca Kelly Ballet, a small 20+ year-old company based in SoHo, will present its New York Season at the end of this month (see performance corner this issue) just blocks away from our classes at Ailey, at the Gerald Lynch Theater on 58th & 10th avenue. A choreographer with strong themes and a troupe of diverse, exceptional dancers, Rebecca has a remarkable program planned – one that I have had the honor of understudying for the past month or so.

From the day I auditioned I knew that working with this company would be different from my past experiences. Rather than focusing on the nitty-gritty technical details of dancing, her work is more concerned with expressing emotion and ideas through movement. Since January I've had the opportunity to get a taste of several of her ballets, with themes reflecting everything from environmental issues to the Iraq War. But the work I'm most involved with now is a world premiere titled, "Writing in Water."

A metaphor for the ephemeral nature of dance, the piece features 5 dancers intertwining in various combinations and phrases to music from Beethoven's "Grosse Fugue." The concept motivating the ballet is that a performance is a moment in time you can never get back. Like trying to write in water, it is fleeting, transient, and gone almost quicker than it came.
That feeling when you surface into the spotlight, out of the shadows of the darkness drowning you and into a state where no thought occurs but being alive – it can never be felt the same again. And if someone missed seeing you dance, that moment can never be returned. You are back in the endless stream of dancers in New York City wading desperately through to reach your dreams, resisting the tide of failure and rarely coming up for air.

Such a theme makes me appreciate the chances I have (had) to do what I love. Ironically, I was called in to be an understudy after one of the original cast members discovered a stress fracture in her foot. Sometimes I think we take for granted what a gift dancing is – to be free with movement, to express unconditionally, to challenge and improve daily, to possess the physical ability to embody passion.

I stand at the back of these rehearsals as the mere apprentice marveling at the beauty behind the steps. Every movement has a reason, and every reason goes back to the one theme that gets me out of bed every morning: the love of dance.

I hope you will make time to see their performances April 24-26 and consider your own appreciation for movement and for life.
The Gerald Lynch Theater of John Jay College is located at 899 10th Avenue at 58th St, NYC. April 24-26 Thursday at 7:30pm, & Friday and Saturday, at 8pm. For tickets call Ticket Central: 212-279-4200. (416 W 42nd St., 12-8pm) or click here. Student & Senior discounts are available.

BALLET TERMS
Gargouillade: a gargoyle is a carved stone grotesque statue with a spout designed to convey water from a roof and away from the side of a building. The term in ballet is said to be taken from that design of a Water spout; it's an advanced jump from one foot to the other. "out in- In out" (gargouillement or gargouillis: Noise which makes a liquid in the throat, the stomach, a drain, etc.) Listen to French pronunciation here. Gargouillade can be done either en dehors, or en dedans, with single rotation or double rotation in the rond de jambe, with or without the final extension of the leg in a la seconde and with or without the rond de jambe occuring in one leg or both. There is also a gargouillade volé (final extension effacé devant). And of course, it can be forté or sur la place. (Fr. embellished step; outward-An embellished pas de chat). "a jump in which both feet write rings in the air"-ALASTAIR MACAULAY, NY Times.

Weekly Tips: Stretching, Pointe, Health, & More
*Stretch-o-da-Month: April 2008:
Fish Pose:It is said that if you perform this pose in water, you will be able to float like a fish. We will work with the knees bent, feet on the floor, for the first part of the month. Then towards the middle of April we'll straighten your legs out onto the floor, keep your thighs active, and press out through the heels. Maybe by the end of the month we can try a third variation: with an exhalation, lifting the legs off the floor to an angle of 45 degrees relative to the floor. Always check for this stretch in the newsletter of the month. To check archives click here.

*Pointe Shoe Tip 'o the Week:
Remember everyone, your 10-class Aliey pointe class card saves you money. And the class times, noon Monday-Wednesday-Friday, make for a great lunch hour break...and Saturdays at 6 make a nice warmup for a fun night on the town. Oh and yes this card will be a great savings for the Summer Weekend Workshops beginning in June!

OH YES! AND GAYNOR MINDEN has a NEW and improved supple shank and allows you to roll thru....a must in Kat's or any proper pointe classes. So yes if you roll thru those demi-points you can wear these lovely shoes in pointe class, even if you are not performing tonight! (and if you cannot properly roll-thru don't even think about it-LOL!) Also Carina S. gets suede tips added $10 extra, but she says 'totally worth it'. Yeah I bet, keeps you from slipping. Thanks for the info Carina S! As an intelligent adult, you need to be fitted by a professional fitter and you need to wear pointe shoes that will support you properly while you train, not performance ready shoes because it may be a long while before you are ready to perform on pointe, especially if you have improper pointe shoes to train in.

*Health:
*Deal of the Month: GET STONED. Kat received a gift certificate for a relaxing stone massage at the Green Phoenix Spa on W 46 St. Sherry was more than wonderful. She seemed to know where those stones needed to go and stay. Make an Appt with Sherry by phone all thru the month of APRIL for only $50 per hour and whoa...just chill it's awesome! 212 221-1330

Awards are available to reconstruct or restage works by master American choreographers of the twentieth century. For all projects, public involvement within and/or beyond the academic community is critical. At each site, performances, panel discussions, lectures, school showings, open rehearsals, film or video showings, symposia or other activities should allow general audiences access to the history of the dance work and the process of creating choreography. Other organizations may collaborate, including musical ensembles, dance companies, community-based dance organizations, presenting institutions, or elementary and high schools. It is permissible for several colleges to collaborate on one project. Awards will be made in the amount of $10,000 each. For more information and to download the program guidelines, visit the Dance/USA Web site. -JH.
