***Experience The Education***
Welcome to your free, MONTHLY, online connection to Ballet Class!

Kat's ballet classes consist of a structured ballet barre', along with stretching and strengthening exercises. Center work focuses on coordination, musicality, and performance quality. Adult Ballet students will gain the benefits of poise, grace, proper posture, and self-assurance, along with a solid foundation for all forms of dance. Adult Ballet Classes are offered for advanced beginning through advanced intermediate levels. All dancers are invited to join us! If you have never done ballet, or need basics, it is advised that you seek out a basic level class, which Kat does not teach in her current schedule, however private lessons can be arranged. www.katwildish.com

A Word (or more) from Kat
Aloha, I want to thank you all for attending/participating in our 2nd Student workshop this past Sunday June 1st and also thank you for checking out all our guest teachers all last month while I was away. Lisa Lockwood , Jeanette Hoffman, Eric Hoisington, Paul Sutherland , Julio Bragado , Flavio Salazar , Francis Patrelle: we would like to thank each of you for sharing your knowledge and experience and making May 2008 a very memorable month of classes.

I'm working with the Hawaiian Cultural center and their local Patrons of the Arts to create an affordable 2 week workshop in Waimea, Hawaii for you next spring. Vlad and his wife have agreed to join us, and I will keep you posted on the details. Please save your newsletters so you can refer back to it throughout the month for performances, services, and the like or check archives for this month's and prior copies. We start our weekend workshops on the 7th, hopefully together this summer in 8 weekends we can begin to perfect certain details and aspects of your basic ballet technique in Saturday and Sunday intensive classes thru July. These will be open to all levels, shapes, and sizes. Join us on the weekends throughout this summer. Please don't forget to move up so the dancers behind you have room to dance! All my best wishes, Kat

Weekly Tips: Stretching, Pointe, Health, & More
*Stretch-o-da-Month: June 2008: Dolphin Pose. Stretches the shoulders, hamstrings, calves, and arches. Strengthens the arms and legs. Remember to breathe during all your stretching endeavors.

*Pointe Shoe Tip 'o the Week:
:
Remember everyone, your 10-class Aliey pointe class card saves you money. And the class time, noon -Wednesday-, makes for a great lunch hour break...and Saturdays at 6 make a nice warmup for a fun night on the town. Oh and yes this card will be a great savings for the Summer Weekend Workshops beginning next month, when we add Sunday Pointe class @ 2:45!

*Ribbons must be worn with your pointe shoes during class, to support your ankle and assist in proper training. To do it correctly, hold a pencil vertically, just in front of the anklebone, and make a small pencil mark. This is where the back of the ribbon will go. They should be sewn deep into the shoe, almost at the shank. An elastic strap sewn to the sides of the back of the shoe, about one-and-a-half inches apart, will help to keep the heel of the shoe snug against the heel of the foot.

*New material application in pointe shoes

*Health:
*Feed your muscles. Eat a combination of protein and carbs (like your favorite fruit yogurt) 30 minutes before class, rehearsal or work-out . Then eat again two-to-four hours afterwards. Studies show that eating close to the time of exercise aids muscle recovery.

Don't wait, drink up. If you have to perform at high- intensity for more than an hour, sip a sports drink when you're in the wings or between combos. It will ensure your electrolytes and fluids stay at optimal levels when you're performing.

Sip a meal. If you don't have any appetite afterward class, try a liquid recovery drink . While you shouldn't substitute them regularly for meals, they can help you get through a super-crammed day of work, class and rehearsals.

*Seriously. If you're tired of yogurt, sip some kefir, a fermented probiotic milk drink that originated in the Caucasus Mountains. Loosely translated, the name means "pleasure" or "good feeling." Mild and slightly sweet, with a hint of natural carbonation and the tang of yogurt, it'll keep you feeling good even through the toughest ballet classes. Kefir's protein, minerals and B vitamins will stimulate your immune system, enhance lactose digestion, and inhibit pathogens -- what better way to keep healthy during the hot summer season? And exotic as it sounds, you can find kefir in health food stores like Whole Foods and Westerly, where a 32-oz bottle goes for $4.39. Gregory O lubs the stuff!

*Heat or cold: How should ballet dancer treat a sore knee?

*The Ailey Studio: Rules Food is not permitted in the studios, Beverages other than water are not permitted, No glass bottles or cans are permitted, No chewing gum is permitted (oops), Street shoes are not permitted in the studios, Non-dance shoes and slippers must be worn at all times outside of the studios, No bare-feet outside the studios, Smoking is not permitted anywhere in or around the building, Photography and videography are not permitted anywhere in the building without prior written permission. Okay got that?
